The fighting game is based on an American comic book series that was first published by Marvel Comics in 1992. The series was written and drawn by Steve Engle, with the exception of the first and last panels, which were drawn by Al Davis. The first story arc focuses on the life of a man named Jim Nelson, who is adopted by a woman named Jenny, and is raised by her in New Jersey. They are joined by other supporting characters, including the Nelsons' mother and Jenny's boyfriend, as well as many other characters from the series. The stories primarily revolve around the characters' relationships, struggles, and adventures.

The first series was followed by eight other series, with a total of 62 stories. The stories were mainly about the characters' adventures, but there were also many science-fiction elements. The series ended in 2010 with the conclusion of the first story arc. In 2018, Marvel Comics announced that the series would be returning to comics in October 2018, with a new story arc beginning in October 2019. The first story arc was written by Nick Spencer, with art by David Agan and Steve Bright, while the second arc was written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by David Maruso.
